From Superman #689, as Mon-El travels the world, seeing the sights and saving the day:
I meet a hero named Von Hammer in Bonn, Germany.
Though he isn’t a superhero, like my other new friends.
No, Will Von Hammer is a private detective.
… with a lot of wit and a little invulnerability due to his mother (an American soldier stationed here when she met the father of Von Hammer), whose grandfather happened to be an old-time superhero named Stormy Foster.
We fought the super-powered muscle of a crime-lord as part of a case involving a beautiful widow, cursed rubies, and the last will and testament of a billionaire albino midget.
It all sounded very exotic to me, but Will said it was just Thursday. This single page has shot up the list to become one of my all-time favorite comic book pages.
It says a lot, but it makes you imagine so much more.
Come on. Let’s savor this bit one more time:
“… a case involving a beautiful widow, cursed rubies, and the last will and testament of a billionaire albino midget.”
I. Fucking. Love. Comics.
